Shatranj was bred by Esther out of Czeresnia (Chess), a mare that was on loan to see if she could become a high level endurance horse. Unfortunately at some point Esther had to conclude she did not have the mental perseverance needed to be brave enough to face all the competitive world would throw at her and she decided to breed 1 foal before the mare was returned to the owner.
Shatranj was sired by Shaho (Diament du Rolon, by Persik) and was a beautiful little foal. The little being the operative word as she did not grow to the expected height expected with a tall dam and a reasonably sized sire. She measures 1.46m which is a bit too small for Esther. Shatranj was therefor competed by other (smaller) riders, though at some point Esther rode her herself on her 2 2* rides as it was not always easy to find suitable riders. Because Esther felt Shatranj was too small to have to carry (over) 75 kg she has retired her as a broodmare.
She has got a break after her third foal in 2020 by Aquilegio Akhdhar and she is available for sale (or breeding lease). Shatranj can be brought into work again to be a great junior/young rider horse. As a performance horse she's fast (despite her size) and will require a confident rider as she's a sharp (but honest) little mare. I am sure she would also be very happy as a broodmare, Shatranj loves being a mum and has produced some stunning foals, all are a lot bigger than herself.
